Now that I have decided to start this “Ecoventure”, where do I go from here? I guess I should take stock of who we are and how we live, what we already do in eco-friendly ways and what areas we need to improve in or start over.
The Good News – I already fully participate in curbside recycling, I almost always bring my re-useable grocery bags to the grocery store, I changed all of the light bulbs in my house to compact flourescents, I taught my kids to save water when they brush their teeth, I always run full loads of laundry and a full dishwasher, I have dabbled in growing organic fruits and veggies, I love to cook so my family always gets home cooked, whole food, partially organic meals.
The Bad News – I drive a big gas guzzler, I live in a very hot climate so I run my air conditioner like crazy, I always forget to turn off lights when I leave a room, I love to cook so I fire up the range and oven every day and further heat up the house, my house is not particularly energy efficient, I drive to the grocery instead of walking or biking the 2 1/2 blocks.
I am sure that there is a lot more room for improvement, but I can start with these items that I have already identified. In the coming days, I will be brainstorming and researching different ways that I can improve my family’s carbon footprint and impact on this planet. Hopefully along the way I will be able to not only save energy, but also save some money as well.
